Omanis greet profusely on meeting and parting and it would be polite to return the gesture with a friendly remark or a handshake. Unlike western handshake the handclasp is light and may be followed by placing the hand over the heart to show sincerity. Although Oman is a muslim country there is no need for women to wear headscarves or veils or dress in floor-Length, long sleeved garments. However respect for local customs is recommended and it is better to dress a little bit more conservatively than you might in your home country. Short, revealing or tight clothes can be worn, but it will attract lot of unwelcome attention. It is always better to keep shoulders and knees covered in public. Topless sunbathing is definite no-no. Attitudes in rural areas are more conservative than cities. But you can be more fashionable and revealing in Hotel Pubs. |
