MASIRAH ISLAND
Masirah Island lies 20km off the south-east coast of Oman and is the Sultanate’s largest island. It is about 80km long and 18km wide, with hills in the centre and a circumference of picturesque isolated beaches.
The island is off the coast of the Barr Al Hikman area, and can be accessed by taking a ferry from Shana’a – but only during high tide. You can cross with your car, and the crossing takes around 90 minutes.
There is a military base on the island, and the main town of Hilf, with its 8,000 residents, has a hotel, some shops, and a couple of restaurants, but otherwise the island is relatively undeveloped.
The highest point of the island is Jebel Hamra at 275m, and a network of graded roads connects parts of the island.
