Oman is situated in the south-eastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula. Sultanate It borders the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the west, Yemen on the south-west and the United Arab Emirates on the north-west. It is the third largest country in the peninsula having 309,500 square kilometers land area. Oman’s coastalline is about 1,700 km long, which extends to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea as well as the Indian Ocean. Most of the central Oman is a vast gravel desert with mountain ranges along the north and south east coast. Oman’s climate is hot and dry in the interior and humid along the coast.
The country is divided into eight administrative regions that include 3 governorates and 5 regions. Muscat, Dhofar and Musandam are the 3 governorates. The regions are A’Dakhliyah, A’Dhahirah, Al Batinah, Al Wusta and A’Sharqiyah. Each region is further divided into smaller ‘wilayats’ or districts headed by a ‘wali’ or district governor. The capital of the country is Muscat. |
